Livorno
food tasting in the most lively port in Tuscany,
full of its flavours and traditions… sea food, fish soups but also esquisite vegetarian dishes and amazing wines
Livorno“>
This town is the historical antagonist of Pisa, probably due to the proximity of these two major centres and rivalry between their ports.
This rivalry (in modern days) has, of course, been amplified by football supporters and by a very sharp satirical comic magazine entitled “Il Vernacoliere”, which reflects the humour of this town and its people. Il Vernacoliere.
Proof of the rivalry is in the graffiti all over Livorno and Pisa respectively “Pisa merda” or “Livorno merda” (merda stands for faeces).
In the charming Porto Mediceo is the Fortezza Vecchia, one of the town’s two 16th Century red brick castles. Its location, amongst fishing boats and against a backdrop of imposing cruise ships, is a perfect representation of life in Livorno. pisa merda.
Many of the major cruise ships that cruise through the Mediterranean Sea stop at Livorno for day trips taking you to the rest of Tuscany.
Leisure: Food tasting
Being a busy fishing port, Livorno is full of character and decently priced fresh fish. Many of the local restaurants or “Trattorie” serve the dish Livorno is renowned for, the “Cacciucco”, a spicy and chunky fish stew made with at least five varieties of fish (depending on what is fresh) and is accompanied with red wine than white.

Leisure: Passeggiare al fresco
As a digestive, you must try a hot Ponce Livornese; a cocktail containing coffee, rum and cognac.
If the Ponce doesn’t do the job, a stroll along the palm-lined seafront might help and perhaps another drink at the Terrazza Mascagni, where you can enjoy the fresh evening sea breeze.
